HP has bought one of the most ancient and important tech companies: Palm. The value was set at $1.2 billion and the migration from Palm to HP should be done by July 31st. During the transition, Palm’s general manager, Jon Rubinstein, should remain in charge of the company.

The purchase of Palm not only gives HP a more important position on the smartphone market, but it would also allow the company to use the WebOS on their own devices. Up to now, HP had never had the occasion of using their own operational system and this could be one of the main reasons for the purchase. WebOS could give HP a big advantage on competitors that use Windows Phone 7.

Also important are the number of patents that Palm brings to HP. The history and experience that Palm acquired during the years should also be of great value to HP. We will wait and see what this merge brings.

Since the beginning of times, Gold has always been World’s more precious metal. Now, what comes out when a cellphone manufacturer decides to add it to one of its models?

Well, that’s what Gresso has achieved with their new Skeleton Gold model. Its keys are made with 18k Gold and the QVGA display is protected by a 42k Sapphire glass. The same Sapphire glass can also be found on its back, completely transparent and showing the internal components.

The rest of the features are the same as the normal Skeleton model, featuring Windows Mobile 6.0 Standard, multimedia player, 2 megapixel photocamera, 2GB internal memory and bluetooth. Only 50 units were made, and if you’re interested, you better have $4400 ready, because that’s how much it costs.

    Ouch, we say.

The video above shows a rather unique new user interface. The new “futuristic” 3D interface with variable depth, currently being developed by the TAT - The Astonishing Tribe team is rather interesting. Currently, it’s a concept of a new user interface for the latest mobile devices, and thanks to the new 3D Eyetracking UI, it’ll be possible to have interesting graphic effects according to the angle of the device and the eyes. All this would be possible thanks to dedicated graphic chips, motion sensors and photocameras.

The developers have released a video to show how the concept works. The team is also responsible for famous interfaces such as Kastor, and other projects can be found on their official website.

Another model comes to add itself to the newest touchscreen Smartphone models: the Inventec Zen, featuring the Windows Mobile OS (soon to be called Windows Phone).

The Zen follows the standard on most smartphones when it comes to the display, it’s a touchscreen with WVGA resolution (800×480 pixels), 128MB RAM, 256MB ROM and a 528MHz processor. It also features the 3G technology, FM radio, GPS with A-GPS, Wi-Fi and BlueTooth.

It doesn’t feautre anything new, really, but depending on the cost, it can be a good alternative to the more famous smartphones such as the Omnia HD or Touch HD.

Big announcement from Yahoo! in Barcellona. After the last month’s indecisions about its presence in the mobile sector, it seems that the company has finally decided to invest resources on the market.

The beta testing for the new Yahoo! Mobile service will start on March 2009, at least for the United the States, and it should be concluded by the end of June. The service will introduce a new mobile web portal, a new iPhone application and applications for Nokia, Blackberry, Samsung, Sony Ericsson, Motorola and Windows Mobile smartphones.

In a nutshell, it’s a corrected and reviewed version of Yahoo! Go!, in which are integrated Yahoo oneConnect and Yahoo onePlace, announced a few months ago but never released, except a beta version for the iPhone. Yahoo’s intentions the fusion of those services in one plaftorm are, according to the official press release:

    * Discover: via results from Yahoo!’s award-winning mobile search, editor-selected content, and new maps tools.
    * Stay Connected: through access to their email and social network accounts from the most popular Web providers, as well as instant messaging, address book and calendar tools.
    * Stay Informed: by bringing together favorite content - websites, sports teams, news sources, RSS feeds, weather, stocks, horoscopes and more - into a single location.

Initially, Yahoo! Mobile will be available in the United States, Canada, Great Britain, France, Germany, India, Indonesia and The Philippines, and other countries might see it throughout the year. From the images released, the idea seems rather solid and well-developed. But we couldn’t help but notice the absence of Android as a supported Operational System.

    Coincidence?

After seeing Blue Earth, Samsung’s Ecological cellphone that recharges itself with solar energy, LG has declared that they also have a new “ecological” model that will be launched on the Mobile World Congress that starts today in Barcellona.

For now, the name isn’t known, but it’s not built with plastic coming from recycled bottles, such as the Blue Earth. The package is, however, made with recycled carton and also the manuals are made with recycled paper. The integrated solar panels allow a 3-minute battery duration every 10 minutes of exposition to the sun.

We’ll be waiting for the official launch.

With the array of new models that are recently coming, we’ve witnessed the implementation of many sensors that enhance the user’s interaction with the software, such as the touchscreen, accelerometer, proximity sensor and others. In a few months, however, we’ll be hearing about the “wind recognition” sensor, at least that’s what Pantech promises.

The wind recognition device isn’t about just blowing air into the microphone, but a true sensor that registers the wind that goes by the device. It would be useful in order to use certain programs such as virtual kisses, or blowing on a flower to see its petals flying away. The first model to feature it will be the IM-S410.

Useful or not? We’ll leave it up to you.
