All big names. Super AMOLED, AMOLED, LCD. But what’s the true diference between them? The guys from Techblog have made a comparative video with the Samsung Galaxy S (4″, 480 x 800 pixels and Super AMOLED), the HTC Desire (3.7″, 480 x 800 pixels, AMOLED) and the Sony Ericsson XPeria X10 (4″, 480 x 854 pixels, TFT LCD). The video shows the different displays even under sunlight, and it’s a good demonstration of what makes those displays different from one another.
Enjoy!

The Mobile World Congress is the most important event when it comes to the mobile phone industry. The next year’s event, as it was revealed by John Hoffman, will be held from February 14th to February 17th, always in Barcellona.
The last Mobile World Congress saw a boom of new touchscreen smartphones, so we’ll have to wait and see what next year’s event will bring.

The Bluetooth Special Interest Group has talked about the Bluetooth 4.0 and the roadmap for the new specifications. The first devices featuring Bluetooth 4.0 will be sold by the end of this year.
The specifications for the Bluetooth 4.0 were thought for the devices with low energy requirements. The Bluetooth SIG has the intention of extending the 4.0 not only to PC, mobile phones and headphones, but also to watches and clocks, pedometers and such. Among the specifications for the Bluetooth 4.0, there’s the possibility of high-speed Bluetooth-to-WiFi, more “wireless capability” to gadgets such as photocameras, portable consoles and tablet PCs, hence helping the communication between devices thanks to the Bluetooth 4.0. It should serve as a bridge for light information without wasting of energy. These protocols have indeed been thought out to be efficient with a low-bit data transfer.
Despite the low-consumption possibility, users will not notice an enhancement in the battery consumption on their own mobile phones: the Bluetooth 4.0 radio waves use as much energy as the Bluetooth 3.0 when used to synchronize smartphones with the laptops or other devices, or to listen to music with the wireless headphones.

The Mobile World Congress shows us many new models from the big companies, but it also gives us small and interesting information, such as the launch of the Aava Mobile, that claims to be completely open source, contrarily to the competition. It features Android 2.1 and it’ll feature the MeeGo OS in the future, but it can also be customized in a hardware and design level.
The developers will be able to propose their own ideas for the manufacturing of a series of models. Aava seems sure that the community power will be a good point for sales as customers will have the phone they want. We’ll have to wait for the project to be developed to know more!

One of the high points on Android is the fact that it’s not exclusive to any cellphone brand. In theory, any manufacturer can create an Android-based cellphone, and that’s what the Russian company HighScreen has done with their PP5420. After years of partnership with Windows Mobile, the company has decided to use Google’s OS on this model, that measures 114 x 53,5 x 13 mm and weighs 120 grams.
The 3″ display has a resolution of 428×240 pixels and the photocamera takes pictures up to 3 Megapixels and has autofocus. The connectivity is done through HSDPA and HSUPA protocols, and the internal 256MB memory is expandable with microSD cards. Other features include the Wi-Fi, FM radio, accelerometer and bluetooth.

Each person has their own passion, and many love travelling and learn more about the countries and places they visit. For those, National Geographic has presented the National Geographic Duet Travel Phone, a device born from the collaboration with the Cellular Abroad carrier, which works with SIM cards aimed for international calls.
The cellphone isn’t exactly the top of technology. Being a device aimed for travellers, it has less of the modern technology in order to enhance the battery duration. It’s strong point is, however, the international calls: the calls cost around 15 to 50 cents per minute to 185 countries, and free entrance calls. The device will be sold for $199.

Since the beginning of times, Gold has always been World’s more precious metal. Now, what comes out when a cellphone manufacturer decides to add it to one of its models?
Well, that’s what Gresso has achieved with their new Skeleton Gold model. Its keys are made with 18k Gold and the QVGA display is protected by a 42k Sapphire glass. The same Sapphire glass can also be found on its back, completely transparent and showing the internal components.
The rest of the features are the same as the normal Skeleton model, featuring Windows Mobile 6.0 Standard, multimedia player, 2 megapixel photocamera, 2GB internal memory and bluetooth. Only 50 units were made, and if you’re interested, you better have $4400 ready, because that’s how much it costs.
Ouch, we say.
