HP has bought one of the most ancient and important tech companies: Palm. The value was set at $1.2 billion and the migration from Palm to HP should be done by July 31st. During the transition, Palm’s general manager, Jon Rubinstein, should remain in charge of the company.
The purchase of Palm not only gives HP a more important position on the smartphone market, but it would also allow the company to use the WebOS on their own devices. Up to now, HP had never had the occasion of using their own operational system and this could be one of the main reasons for the purchase. WebOS could give HP a big advantage on competitors that use Windows Phone 7.
Also important are the number of patents that Palm brings to HP. The history and experience that Palm acquired during the years should also be of great value to HP. We will wait and see what this merge brings.

It seems Dell decided to launch a few interesting cellphone models. After the Dell Lightining, presenting itself as the first Windows Phone 7 mobile and featuring great hardware specifications, now it’s time for the Dell Thunder, featuring Android 2.1 and a 4.1″ WVGA OLED display. The design is similar to Lightning, but it has a highly customized Dell Stage user interface. It will be compatible with Flash 10.1.
Not much more is known for the moment, but it’s likely that this device will also feature a Snapdragon processor and an 8 megapixel photocamera.

After many rumors that claimed that a clamshell BlackBerry was about to be launched, BGR seems to be confirming them now. This is the first image that confirms that the phone indeed exists, called BlackBerry 9670, but not only that: it shows the OS 6.0 working with it.The BlackBerry 9670 is a CDMA device with full QWERTY keyboard, 5 Megapixel photocamera, Wi-Fi, internal display with the resolution of 360 x 480, a big external display, trackpad, OS 6.0, microUSD port, microSD slot, Bluetooth and an apparently metallic cover.
It seems that for now this isn’t a definite design, so a lot could change before it’s launched.

It seems that Microsoft wants to build a “budget” version of their Windows Phone 7 for developing countries. The news about the “low-cost” version of Microsoft’s phone OS seems to have been released during a developers event in India.
The intention is to arrive in those markets soon after the launch of the high-end devices. The low-cost Windows Phone 7 devices would have a smaller display, probably with HVGA quality. But there’s not much else known for the moment, and it’s still unknown what else could be different from the high-end versions of the Windows Phone 7 mobiles.
We’ll wait for official information.

HTC wants to think big for the future: besides its own OS, the company is also thinking about features that will be present on their new smartphones. During an event held in South Africa, the company has mentioned that the future smartphones will have the possibility of recording HD videos (1080p) and surround 5.1 sound thanks to Yamaha.
The possibility of HD recording can be included on HTC devices from the second half of 2011 on, while the Surround 5.1 audio could come sooner. In the meantime, by the end of this year, HTC is planning to launch HSPA+ devices.

HTC is preparing a new mobile, and this time, they’ve asked the Facebook fans to help them choose a name for the new model. It’s not a free choice, but there is a list of four names to choose from: Jovi, Zeal, Wildfire, Festi. According to HTC, the new product needs a name that is “playful and full of youth”.
Nothing else is revealed about the new phone, hence the name’s choice should be completely casual. If you want to give your opinion, here’s the poll page on Facebook.

The pictures can be stored in the 4GB internal memory or shared through Facebook and Twitter. Some other features include a series of softwares that modify pictures, create music videos; support to Dolby Mobile and four different colors (Blue, Black, Silver and Violet).

Microsoft has officially launched their Kin series, called the “social phones”. The Kin 1 is the first on the series that the company wants to launch on the market.
Previously denominated as Turtle, the Kin is a square phone with a slide QWERTY keyboard, small enough to be held on the palm of one hand. The Kin 1 is proposed as a multimedia player with “something else”, internet connection and access to social networks. Technically speaking, the specifications aren’t bad, but they’re not extraordinary either: display with the resolution of 320 x 240 pixels, 5 megapixel photocamera with flash, 4Gb memory, non expandable. There’s no mention of a GPS, strangely enough.
It seems to be a phone designed for a younger public and not the advanced users. We’ll post some pictures by the end of this post, and the first video about the Kin 1.
